Observation of International Day of Older persons – October 1, 2015
Ageing is inevitable and the old age is the last phase of human life. According to Indian Population census, people those are in the age of 60 and above are aged people. The understanding and perception of the “aged people” varies from one culture to another. World Health Organization defines “ageing as a process of biological reality which has its own dynamic, largely beyond human control and the perception of ageing depends on the social, cultural and economic factors. In 1990, the United Nations Organisation designated October 1 as the International Day of Older persons. The theme of the 2015 commemoration is “Environment”. In India at present one in twelve people are aged and is expected to reach one in five Indians by 2050. 
The Department of Sociology and Social work observed the International Day of older persons by conducting various programmes both inside and outside the college campus. The students performed a street theatre emphasizing the Need to Care for aged and the existing pathetic situation of aged people in our society. The street theatre was performed in the villages of Thirumalnatham, Rayapuram, Rishabam and Nagari where it got astounding response and feedback from public. Tableau was enacted by five groups of students in the themes of
·         A Happy Home needs Old age people for peaceful life
·         Role of Youth in taking care of aged
·         Aged people – potential Human Resource
·         Say No to Physical Abuse
·         Role of Aged in the Family
Dr.Sr.K.Fatima Mary, Principal, Fatima College started the signature campaign which was organized with the objective to create awareness about Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.More than 600 people made their signature by taking the oath of “I will create awareness about Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.The signature campaign programme was supported by Help Age India, Madurai.
