Role of Budding Sociologist in Creating Responsible Citizens - II

The Department of Sociology and Social work has initiated a new programme called “Creating Responsible Citizens”. The purpose of this programme is to create awareness among the school students about our Indian constitution and the significance of clean environment. As a part of this programme, the students of our department performed various activities in St.Joseph Higher Secondary School, Madurai on 7th December 2015.Rev Sr. Esther Mary, Correspondent felicitated the function.   Rev.Sr.Angeline Ramani blessed the students with her gracious presence.
The programme started with the enactment of the Street Theatre portraying the significance of clean environment. This was followed by our traditional folk art Villu Paatu. Villu paatu was a new experience to the school students. In Villu Paatu, our college students sung about our fundamental rights and fundamental duties mentioned in our constitution.
Shadow puppet show was organized which conveyed the evils of deforestation and the need of afforestation. The school students enjoyed the programme well as the message was conveyed through puppets. This is the unique learning experience for Fatimites also as they made performance for the well organized group of school students. The programme came to an end with vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Violet Rani, St.Joseph Higher Secondary School, Madurai .

Observation of the International day of persons with disability

SOCIAS – The student union of the Department of Sociology and Social Work organized a programme on Awareness and prevention of disability to commensurate the international day of persons with disability the programme was organized with the support of  YMCA Kamak Higher Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired.
Ms.B.Udhaya of I MSW welcomed the gathering. Mrs.Sharmila Dorie, Secretary, YMCA explained the objectives of the programme. Ms.Angel Selvaraj, Assistant Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Science, Holy Cross College, Tiruchirapalli started her session with explaining the significance of the observation of International Day of persons with Disabilities. In simple words, she explained the difference among Impairment, Disability and Handicap.
Following that types of impairment, disability and handicap was explained. The session was followed by a discussion were the students clarified their doubts relating to disability in Madurai Districr. The programme came to an end with the vote of Thanks proposed by Ms.B.Rajalakshmi of II BA Sociology.

The students of Shanthi Vidhyalaya, a primary school in Vilangudi had a new experience on October 20, 2015, as they watched and learnt new concepts, which would be helpful for their life. ‘Creating responsible citizens’ is a unique programme initiated by the department of Sociology and Social Work to create awareness about our Indian Constitution and Clean Environment. A skit was performed whi9ch was followed by a Villupattu which focused on fundamental rights and duties mentioned in our constitution. A puppet show was done portraying the uimportance of clean environment. A quiz programme was conducted relating to the contents of our constitution and the prizes were distributed for the students.
