Free Eye Check – Up Camp

A free eye check-up camp was organized by the Department of Sociology and Social Work, Fatima College along with Vasan Eye Care Hospital at Sathya Moorthi Nagar area on 25th August 2016. A Crew of Vasan eye care which consists of Mr. Kathirvel, Public Relation Officer and Ms.Indra & Ms.Prabha conducted the Camp.

The camp was started by Mr.Sundaram and by Mr. Marimuthu Counselors of Sathya Moorthi Nagar Village at the primary school of that village.

Around 50 villagers got benefited from the camp.  The villagers highly appreciated Fatima College and Vasan eye care group for organizing this free eye camp.  Seniors of the village narrated that “It is a boon for them, since they are not in a position to go and have eye checkup independently”.  In this, few villagers were suggested to approach Vasan hospital for further check up and surgery.  
Also "Such initiatives are helpful for poor people like me who cannot afford expensive procedures and medicines for Checkup" said Aanandhi (36)

WORLD POPULATION DAY


The Department of Sociology and Social Work observed the World Population Day on 11.07.2016.According to census 2011, the population of India is 1.21 billion and it is expected to increase beyond the population level of China. The high population of India has a major impact on the economic and social life our country. India is a place where women are always considered as secondary citizens. Indians mostly prefer sons rather than daughters due to various social and psychological reasons. The sex ratio our country is quite alarming which is 940 females for 1000 males.
The United Nations Organization declared the theme for this year as ‘Investing in teenage girls’ to make them agents of positive change for the future. Education provided to a girl would enhance the entire generation of that girl. Fatima College – a pioneer in providing education to girls conducted various programmes on account of World Population Day.
The Department of Sociology and Social Work organized a street theatre emphasizing the evils of high population inside the campus where the students and faculty members of all other departments witnessed the programme .At the end of the programme a mini quiz programme on “Population of India” was conducted and the prize winners were Ms.Abiramakumari and Ms.Dhivyaa of I M.Sc Computer science. With due appreciation the prizes were given by Dr.Sr.K.Fatima Mary, Principal and Sr.M.Fatima Mary, Vice Principal, Fatima College. Posters on Population issues and statistics of Indian and Global population was prepared by our students and was displayed all around the campus.
As a part of creating awareness among the problems of population in the villages, street theatre on evils of population was organized in Madurai East Taluk middle school in Athalai village. The students between I standard and VIII standard and all the teachers of the school attended the programme. Posters on population problems were also displayed and explained by our college students. It was well received and constructive feedback was given by both the students and teachers of the school
