Significance of Health and Hygiene – Street Theatre Performance in
 Madurai Railway Junction

“A clean India would be the best tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150 birth anniversary in 2019,” – Narendra Modi, The Prime Minister of India.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national campaign by the Government of India, covering 4,041 statutory cities and towns, to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. The campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, Delhi. As a part of this campaign, The Southern Railways, Madurai Junction has organized a Special Cleanliness Campaign.
The Department of Sociology and Social Work has got a requisition from the officials of Madurai Southern Railways to perform a street theatre to create awareness about the significance of Health and Hygiene. The street theatre group of the Department performed the street theatre in front of the Madurai Railway Junction. More than 600 people witnessed the programme. The public including railway commuters, officials, workers of the railway junction police personnel, school and college students, nearby shop keepers, auto drivers and press people viewed the programme.
The cleaners of the railway junction felt quite happy about the theme of the street theatre as they play the major role in making the junction spic and span. The students of the theatre group being the social workers felt that they have made a start for gradual change from dirtiness to cleanliness in the junction.
The students are highly appreciated by the Railway officials and the students are awarded with Rs.5000.
