REPORT ON THE OBSERVATION OF WORLD OLD PERSONS DAY


As a part of the observation of world old person’s day, the Department of Sociology and Social Work commenced to sensitize the people on the problems faced by elders in India. The department has mapped to sensitize the people on the problems faced by elders by means of street theatre on 1.10.2016. The students from the Department of Sociology and Social Work have presented street theatre in two villages in Madurai namely Thirumalnatham and Sathymoorthy Nagar. The young people and children in the two villages were made to be extreme conscious that how elders are treated in the society? The street theatre depicted that the old age is the last of phase of life cycle is important in the life of an individual. The street theatre demonstrated the obscurity countenanced by elders in India. The street theatre exhibited the vulnerability of the elderly in our society. Our students exemplified the problems of elders such as role complications, economic, physical and emotional problems. Our students have given a picture of how urbanization, westernization and modernization are waving in transforming the traditional Indian culture in excluding elders in daily life through the street theatre. Children and youth were vastly sensitized the significance of elders in imparting moral and social values, bringing healthy and positive social transformation in the society. The students also had enlighten people on the attentive role of family, society and the government in concerning elders by taking care of the elders and by providing special old age welfare schemes.  It was well appreciated by the seniors and the young people of the village. 





The sensitization program on world old person’s day was inaugurated by our students in Thirumalnatham village.
