OBSERVATION OF WORLD POPULATION DAY

The World Population day is an annual event observed all over the world on every July11 for the purpose to create awareness about the issues of global population. This day is being observed from the year of 1989 on which the Global population reached five billion. Every year the United Nations announce the theme for observation and the theme for the year 2015 is Vulnerable Population in Emergencies.

India is one of the third world countries which is highly affected by over population. India’s current population is equivalent to 17.5% of the total world population and it is the second highly populated nation in the world. India’s population is 1210.2 million which is almost equal to the combined population of USA, Indonesia, Pakistan, Brazil, Bangladesh and Japan. All age group people like children, women, youth, and old age people are facing problems directly or indirectly due to the unplanned birth of children. It is high time to control the unnecessary child birth and it is the responsibility of everyone to propagate the ills of excess population and also the goodness of having optimum population.

The Department of Sociology and Social Work of Fatima College observed the World Population Day on July 10, 2015 and created awareness to the college students and to the people of seven villages in Madurai District about the evils of over population. The chart work about the statistics of population in developed and developing countries, reasons and consequences of over population, environmental pollution, decline in the quality of life due to population, physical and mental health issues were displayed all over the college campus.
The students went for a rally inside the campus where the students participated by dressing like of pregnant women and young mothers. At the end of the rally, the students enacted a street play which projected the problems related to transportation, unemployment, getting basic commodities like food and water due to uncontrolled population in our society. The street play insisted on having child by choice and not by chance.

The street play was performed in the villages of Sholavandan, Tiruvedagam, Thenur, Oormechikulam, Kallikudi, Sathyamoorthy Nagar and Paravai Government Higher Secondary School. It was well received by the villagers especially by the women. The students of Paravai Government Higher Secondary School gave a overwhelming response and promised that they would the spread the message to the family members and friends about the purpose of observing World Population Day.
